Weekly Update for 6.25.21

CDC Director: Nearly every COVID-19 death at this point is "entirely preventable."

At the height of the pandemic in the U.S., more than 4,000 Americans were dying each day of complications from COVID-19. Currently, our country has lost more than 600,000 Americans to the illness.

Today, the death rate in the U.S. has dropped to fewer than 300 deaths per day on average. While that decreasing rate is certainly good news, the troubling truth is this: the death rate could be closer to zero if more people were vaccinated.

In a White House briefing on Tuesday, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease Control, said the current COVID-19 vaccines are nearly 100% effective against severe disease and death. "Nearly every death due to COVID-19 is particularly tragic," said Dr. Walensky, "because nearly every death, especially among adults, due to COVID-19 is, at this point, entirely preventable.”

Currently in the United States, 63% of people age 12 and older have received at least one dose of vaccine. In Georgia, that number is 42%.

As the virus continues to spread and mutate, it's critically important to get more people vaccinated. Our vaccines have shown great protection against the current variants, but Dr. Walensky is concerned that future mutations could eventually evade our vaccines. "That’s why it’s more important than ever to get vaccinated now," said Dr. Walensky, "to stop the chain of infection and mutation that could lead to a more dangerous variant."

If you have questions about the COVID-19 vaccine, talk with your doctor, talk with a public health nurse, or search reputable sources on the internet so you can make an informed choice about protecting yourself and your family.

Your Vaccine Story

“I chose to get vaccinated because as a public health nurse, I believe the only way to increase vaccine awareness and decrease vaccine hesitancy is to practice what I preach. I wanted to protect myself, protect my family members, and show the community that the vaccine is not harmful in any way. I also really want to go on a cruise : )”
