Chatham Emergency Services Update
In a previous article, I promised periodically to feature the backgrounds and biographies of members of Skidaway Island Division of Chatham Emergency Services. This month, I will highlight Deputy Chief AJ Goldman. After reading his biography, I am sure all will agree that AJ can best be described as a serial achiever.
AJ was born and grew up in the Bay Area of California. He then headed east for school, where he attended Dartmouth College and ultimately earned his Doctoral Degree. In addition to his academic achievements, while at Dartmouth, AJ competed in volleyball, gymnastics, and the biathlon (skiing and shooting). While teaching for a year before entering graduate school, he discovered that his true calling was to be an educator. He has been a high school mathematics teacher for 28 years, and currently is Chair of the Mathematics Department at Savannah Country Day School.
If serving as a high school teacher wasn’t proof enough of his willingness to operate in hazardous situations, while teaching in New Jersey, AJ decided to give back to his community by becoming a volunteer firefighter. He was an active volunteer with the Princeton Fire Department, the nation’s oldest continuing volunteer fire department, for 10 years. While with the Princeton Fire Department, AJ achieved the rank of Lieutenant and served as Training Captain.
In 2018, AJ moved to Savannah and The Landings and subsequently joined Skidaway Division. When he is not engaged in the classroom or on a fire scene, AJ enjoys sailing his 35- foot sailboat out of the Delegal Marina. He also enjoys competing in pickleball, volleyball, tennis, and golf.
AJ Goldman Fun Facts: AJ and his identical twin brother were featured in a Doublemint chewing gum commercial in the 1980s. He also sailed solo from San Francisco to Hawaii in 2010 and rode his motorcycle cross country from New Jersey to San Francisco in 2016.
