LMFRF October Quarterly Report

Compassion, Dedication, Persuasion
By Lou Molella

“There are no words to express how incredibly selfless and generous the amazing group of people at The Landings are!”

“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”

The above quotes from an outgoing Commander’s spouse were previously printed in an earlier report, and you will see an example of those ideas in this article.

So many things have changed in the administration of our Fund since its origin, but our mission has only strengthened and expanded with those changes. This report’s focus is on an extraordinary individual who is the current face of our Fund to our Military.

Jennifer Darsey, the Director of the United Way of the Coastal Empire, Liberty County, is responsible for all casework of the Fund at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. Her office is in Hinesville, and she is available 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week to any one of our more than 22,000 active duty military and their families.

For your initial introduction to Jenn, I’ll share an example of a program she implemented. Jenn had the idea to start a Backpack Buddy program to feed Liberty County school kids who struggle with weekend food uncertainty, but she had no volunteers to pack the meals each week of the school year. Persistent, she enlisted the help of students from Liberty County High School in the Life Skills Class, young adults with developmental disabilities. Jenn has given these often-overlooked children purpose and joy in the weekly task of packing more than 80,000 meals in a school year.

With Command involved, Jenn worked to identify military children in Ft. Stewart schools who could benefit from her program. She realized that our Military is a segment of society, and not immune from many of the same societal issues. Once the Board of our Fund recognized the involvement of Command, and recognized a Military need, they voted to provide monies to Jen’s program to support the Military children. This program is an example of Jenn’s desire to help, and we are very lucky to have her on our team.

The pictures below of Jenn’s volunteers were taken at a party she held for them. I am sure you will see the goodness in this program and know that your support helped to make it possible.

Additionally, Jenn administers an Emergency Soldier Food Voucher Program, which serves active duty soldiers to help alleviate food insecurity in their households.

October marks the start of our annual LMFRF drive; you will be receiving contribution materials across our community in the coming weeks.
