Water Saving Irrigation Tips

Water Deeply, Not Frequently

  • Water early in the morning and late at night when the least amount of water will be lost to evaluation (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.).
  • Irrigate slowly to allow the water to soak into the ground. When water is applied too quickly, water can be lost to runoff.
  • Utilize drip irrigation, or lower the water flow of your sprinkler system.
  • Allow irrigation to run long enough to wet soils into a depth of six inches.
  • Older plants often have a deeper root system, thus requiring less frequent irrigation than newly installed plants/shrubbery.
  • Rule of Thumb: Water as deeply and as infrequently as possible.

Reduce Water Runoff

  • Align your sprinkler heads to avoid irrigating roads, sidewalks, and driveways.
  • Use drip irrigation and other lower volume delivery systems to irrigate slowly.

Maintain Your Sprinkler System

  • Take time to periodically check your irrigation equipment and connections. Look for leaks and broken or buried sprinkler heads.
  • Traditional hose connections at the faucet and sprinkler can also leak, so make sure to check the connections and replace as necessary.

Get Smart with Your Technology!

  • If you have an irrigation system, consider upgrading to a smart controller/meter and installing a rain sensor.
  • Smart water controllers measure weather and soil moisture conditions to automatically adjust watering schedules.
  • Rain sensors can also be adjusted to retrofit most irrigation systems.
  • Make sure to sign up for EyeOnWater to monitor your water use and receive notifications of leaks/high usage (https://eyeonwater.com/signup) and enter your service zip code and service account ID. EyeOnWater is also accessible through TLA’s app.

As a reminder, Georgia’s outdoor imposed watering restrictions are outlined below (including Chatham County):

  • Watering is not permissible between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • The following addresses can water as indicated below:
